AI: The Future of Human-Centered Healthcare
Imagine a future where medical care is not only faster and more accurate, but also more compassionate. Picture your smartwatch warning of irregular heart rhythms before a heart attack, or an app analyzing a skin mole with dermatologist-level precision. Envision radiology reports interpreted with up to 99% accuracy—or ultrasound scans explained right from home.
This is no longer fiction. The future is arriving sooner than we think, and it’s being powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Greater than just a technological leap, AI is humanizing and transforming healthcare by delivering what the traditional medical system has often lacked—compassion, empathy, equity, bias-free and data-driven individual care.
Why Medicine Needs Transformation
Today’s medical model often masks symptoms instead of uncovering root causes. As Dr. Dhruv Khullar, MD noted in The New Yorker, the doctor–patient relationship—once deeply personal—is under strain. Burnout, insurance-driven protocols, and administrative overload mean patients too often leave offices feeling ignored, overprescribed, or overdiagnosed.
Meanwhile, as former CMS head Donald Berwick points out, insurers literally “scour medical records” to exaggerate conditions, inflate diagnosis, and increase reimbursements.—leading to an estimated $7.5 billion in overpayments just in 2023. Clearly, a shift toward honesty, precision, and patient dignity is long overdue.
How AI Can Help?
In a system where providers feel like businesses and patients feel like numbers, AI offers vital support. It does not replace doctors—it augments their abilities. By analyzing complete data, enabling a more deliberate pace, and offering holistic insights, AI supports a more precise, human-centered, and compassionate approach to care—one that prioritizes the individual over administrative checkboxes, and treats the whole person, not just the chart.
This is medicine redesigned around dignity, preferences, and proactive care. And I saw this vision firsthand at the recent AI in Healthcare forum hosted by Microsoft (NYC) and Rutgers University, which I had a pleasure to attend. In addition, in this article I share my take on how AI is humanizing medicine, including the common AI tools in healthcare that everyone can use at home.

How Does the Trust Crisis in Medicine Provoke Healthcare Transformation?
Erosion of Trust
Public trust in the traditional medical system has eroded as patients increasingly see it as profit-driven rather than healing-centered. Burnout, insurance-driven approach, and vague diagnostics expose deep cracks in the healthcare system. As Dr. Dhruv Khullar, MD notes, many insurers and hospitals now act as if revenue comes first, but patients care second. AI offers a compelling alternative: one that returns medicine to its original purpose—care. As Dr. Eric Topol, author of Deep Medicine, explains: “We are moving from sick care to smart care, powered by data and empathy.”
This transformation is not only technological but also ethical. It requires renewed commitments to transparency, accessibility, accountability, and humanity in healthcare—principles too often lost in today’s system.
Systemic Pressures
Burnout, vague diagnostics, and an insurance-driven model expose deep cracks in modern healthcare. Every test, scan, and procedure is tied to billing codes—Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). Higher-complexity codes bring in higher reimbursements, incentivizing unnecessary or padded procedures. Patients are often reduced to revenue streams, rather than being treated as individuals in need of healing.
Dr. Dhruv Khullar, MD, observes: “Increasingly, health insurers, hospitals, and even nonprofits are behaving as though they aim first to extract revenue, and only second to care for people.”
Catalyst for Change
This growing trust gap is fueling demand for patient-centered models. The problem is urgent: by 2030, the World Health Organization (WHO) projects a global shortage of 10 million health workers, while nearly 60% of U.S. physicians already report burnout. AI can step in as a co-pilot, streamlining diagnostics, summarizing records, and reducing costs. According to a World Economic Forum (WEF) report, AI platforms like ChatRWD combined with large language models (LLMs) can already answer up to 95% of medical questions, guiding precise diagnostics and care decisions. This is how AI can help restore both integrity and empathy in medicine—supporting doctors while empowering patients.

During the 2024–25 academic year, Microsoft and the Rutgers Foundation, in partnership with RWJ Barnabas Health, co-hosted a series of closed-door forums and executive education programs on AI in healthcare. These sessions convened leaders across technology, research, medicine, academia, media and policy to explore how AI can enable better health systems while still protecting patient rights and dignity.
I had the privilege of attending these forums as both a student researcher and a certified marketing specialist, holding a Master’s degree in Digital Marketing from Rutgers Business School. The experience was eye-opening—not only because of the cutting-edge technology showcased but also because of the urgent ethical discussions around equity, transparency, and empathy in healthcare, wellness, and medicine.
Meaningful Dialogue at the Microsoft–Rutgers AI Forums
One recurring theme was the need for transparency and ethical governance. “We can’t have a future of medicine that’s only optimized for insurance companies or hospital administrators,” said one participant, “AI must be accountable to the patient.” Another commentator stated: ”We must build AI to serve people’s needs, not to be a digital replica that has feelings and emotions.”
From smart diagnostics to concept of digital twins in medicine to home health tools, the sessions were packed with real-life examples and big-picture questions. In the welcoming setting the mornings kicked off with coffee, abundant continental breakfasts, and great conversations about how to share the ideas with the broader public, media, and policymakers.
The interactive panel, featuring Simon Liepold, Senior Director of UN and International Affairs at Microsoft, as well as Dr. Partho Sengupta, MD, the Rutgers professors Kristin Dana PhD, and Clinton Andrews, PhD, sparked meaningful dialogue between the presenters and the audience. It provoked me to extend my search well beyond the role of AI in reshaping and humanizing healthcare and daily life.

AI in Action: From Digital Twins to Smart Diagnosis
Insights from speakers like Kristin Dana, PhD and Partho Sengupta, MD, DM, FACC, FASE highlighted just how fast AI is reshaping medicine. From cardiology and radiology to robotics and metabolic disease management, we are witnessing a true transformation in healthcare.
One concept that stood out was digital twins, presented by Dr. Sengupta. This idea is also championed by experts such as Dr. Claudia Witt, MD, MBA at Harvard’s Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. She has spoken extensively about AI’s potential in both conventional and integrative medicine. How Does the Digital Twin Concept in Medicine Work?
A digital twin in medicine is a real-time digital replica of a patient, built using AI models that integrate biology, lifestyle, environment, lab tests, imaging, and medical history. Doctors can simulate treatments on this twin to predict outcomes, avoiding trial-and-error approaches and reducing health risk of patients.
This technology enables precision medicine—tailored to each patient. It can cut time and costs in drug trials, improve diagnostics, and deliver more personalized treatment and greater survival or life expectancy.
During the event and through my research I learned:
- In cardiology, AI can detect arrhythmias days before heart attack symptoms appear.
- In primary care, smart tools are already spotting early signs of diabetes, metabolic disorders, and Alzheimer’s—years before symptoms. The elderly care is on the rise-due to the AI revolution.
- In oncology, AI helps detect cancer earlier, optimize treatment plans, assist with precision in radiology and pathology evaluation, predict chemotherapy response to minimize or avoid toxicity, and more.
- Pharma and Dietary Adjustments-AI-assisted platforms can even advise on medications and dietary adjustments tailored to individual needs. These breakthroughs aren’t futuristic—they’re already reshaping patient care today.

Professor Bertalan Meskó, MD, PhD, sums it up best: “Artificial intelligence won’t replace doctors, but doctors who use AI will replace those who don’t.”
AI Health Tools You Can Use at Home
AI is also reshaping patient care at home. These tools are not medical advice, but research highlights their growing role in everyday health:
- Wearables & trackers: Apple Health, Fitbit, and Oura integrate AI to detect anomalies, track chronic conditions, and alert providers early.
- Metabolic monitoring: Tools like Levels use continuous glucose monitoring with AI analytics to show how food, sleep, and stress affect your metabolism.
- Medication management: Apps like MediSafe and MyTherapy flag drug interactions and prevent overmedication.
- Symptom checkers: Platforms like Ada and HealthTap provide quick risk assessments.
- Nutrition & therapy AI: Tools like DialogFlow, Joi, and Blokes use patient test data to guide personalized nutrition and therapies.
- Smart homes for seniors: AI-powered sensors can detect falls, track routines, and monitor cognitive changes, sharing updates with caregivers.
Together, these tools shift care from episodic and reactive to continuous and preventive—giving patients real-time support, 24/7.
Patients Empowered by AI
The patient’s role is also evolving. No longer passive recipients of one-size-fits-all treatment, patients can now actively manage their own care. AI tools provide real-time data, personalized insights, and more equitable access—helping transform healthcare:
